This five a day can be combined of fruit, vegetables, smoothies or juices whether they are dried, fresh, frozen, bottled or canned.

Fruit is low in calories and fat and helps reduce health diseases like cancer and heart disease.

If you need to eat something in between your square three meals a day fruit is an ideal snack choice.

It takes little or no preparation and this may be obvious but it is much healthier for you than a bag of crisps or bar of chocolate.

Remember to vary your fruit intake by choosing from some of the following fruit:

  • Pineapples – this oval shaped fruit helps us to digest food and aids in the building of strong bones.
  • Cherries – these seeded delights contain cyanidin which is an antioxidant that protects the body from cancer cells.
  • Grapes – the wine making fruit improves the nitric oxide levels in the bloodstream which reduces blood clots.
  • Oranges – Rich in vitamin C, the natural oils in oranges helps to maintain your skin making you look young and fresh.
  • Watermelon – This large fruit popular in summertime contains arginine which encourages the body to get rid of excess ammonia and helps heal wounds.
  • Lemons – The well known citric acid fruit works wonders for people with bad breath when mixed with water.
  • Apples – Whether green, red or pink, apples withhold pectin and can help people who suffer from cholesterol by 16%.
  • Bananas – The amino acid tryptophan found in bananas has been proven to help prevent depression.
