Eighteen people have died and nine more are missing after a makeshift boat carrying migrants sank off the coast of Greece. 

Greek port authorities say most of the bodies were washed up on a beach on the island of Lesbos. 

It is believed the boat set sail from Turkey - and was carrying migrants seeking passage to western Europe. 

The search for survivors is continuing this afternoon.
