Street theatre, dancers and a giant 'hugging machine' are just some of the attractions lined up for the St. Patrick's Festival this year.

Now in its 16th year the organisers are promising that festivities this year will leave their mark on the capital.

It was officially launched this morning.

Edelle Moss is acting CEO of St. Patrick’s Festival.

“We are delighted in the year of the Gathering Ireland to be offering the opportunity for so many overseas visitors to be active participants in our world renowned Festival Parade" she said.

"It will certainly be a memorable experience for all and with participants from over 45 different countries it's bound to be a truly international celebration" she added.

8,000 to take part in parade

The centrepiece this year will be the People's Parade with 8,000 people from around the world taking part.

In the year of The Gathering, the Parade will be based around the theme 'Great Things Happen When We Get Together'.

The Festival is estimated to generate about €50 million every year for the economy in the capital.

Kick starting this year’s festival is the Trad Stage in the heart of Dublin city.

It will all take place from 14th-18th March, with more information available here

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar says The Gathering is likely to make this year's festival even better for the city.
