There has been a large increase in the number of complaints made to the Ombudsman for Children.
The annual report of the office for 2011 has been published this morning.
It shows there were almost 1,500 complaints lodged last year which is an increase of 22% on 2010.
Nearly half of the total complaints lodged to the Ombudsman last year related to education issues – including transport and special needs resources.
The Office does say however that they try to encourage schools to resolve issues locally first before going to the body which it says is an “alternative dispute mechanism”.
Children’s Ombudsman Emily Logan says her office chooses to pursue cases that are likely to deliver systemic change.
She spoke with Breakfast here on Newstalk about the report.
