The artist behind a life-size bust of Britain's King Charles, made entirely of chocolate, has said the monarch is welcome to try some.

The sculpture was crafted by an expert team of chocolatiers and model makers, who studied hours of footage of Charles to capture his likeness.

The piece was specially commissioned for his upcoming coronation by Celebrations.

Over 17 litres of the chocolates were melted down, before being injected into a bespoke mold.

The epaulettes of his uniform are made from Twix, Milky Way, Galaxy and Bounty - while Maltesers Teasers were used to decorate the collar.

Describing her work as "23 kilos worth of Charles in chocolate", chocolatier Jennifer Lindsey-Clarke told Moncrieff how it all came about.

"We looked at lots of footage of Charles and then put together some sketches," she said.

"Tim Simpson, who's the chief sculptor, he created the head of Charles in clay first - and then we created a mould using blue grade silicone.

"Then it was my job doing the fun bit: filling it with chocolate, creating a shell of Charles' head out of chocolate".

Ms Clarke said it is around triple the thickness of an Easter egg.

"We put that on to the shoulders and filled it up with Celebration chocolates, and melted them down to make a kind of chocolate clay," she said.

"Then using all the different brands of chocolates in the Celebration variety, we put those on to Charles to make the decorations and the medals.

"The collar was probably the most challenging bit to do.

"[This] was using the Maltesers, chopping the ends off and making the sculpt edge around the collar and then filling in with Milky Ways.

"We had to redo that bit a couple of times because it wasn't quite right, but it was worth it in the end".

If Charles wanted to try it, Ms Clarke said: "I think they'd probably make allowances for the king".

"I don't think it will [be eaten] - mainly because it's too good to eat, but... a lot of work's gone into it, so they'd like to just keep it as a piece of art for people to look at for as long as possible".

The bust is going on display at Mars Wrigley's headquarters in England.
