A 3.5 magnitude earthquake has struck the East Midlands region of England in the second tremor to hit there in as many days. The latest event was described by one resident as "a long-term, solid shake" that lasted around 10 seconds.

The quake happened just before 8am this morning with the epicentre near Oakham in Rutland.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) says it had a depth of 2 kilometres.

This latest tremor came just 24 hours after a similar event, which was described by the BGS as "the largest earthquake to have occurred in the vicinity" since 2001.

Most people described the shaking strength of that earthquake to be either weak or moderate - with mainly a trembling effect.

About one-third of the reports said that windows rattled and or crockery and furniture shook. "I thought is was a lorry rumbling on the main road - or plane flying low", one resident said.

"I heard a very loud rumbling noise then felt a definite vibrating rippling movement move from the back of the room to the front".

"Very quick loud bang with a quick rumble after" they added.
