The Director of Public Persecutions (DPP) has challenged the jail terms imposed on two community volunteers who were caught mixing crack cocaine.

Andrew Goonery of Collinstown Grove, Clondalkin and Darren Boylan of St Marks Grove, Clondalkin each received three and a half year jail sentences after admitting to possessing the drugs for the purpose of sale and supply in November 2009.

The DPP is now appealing their sentences, arguing that they were too lenient.

On Monday it was reported that a four year jail sentence handed to a drunk driver over the deaths of three people and an unborn baby in a 2010 crash had been struck down as unduly lenient by the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Kevin McArdle of Longfield in Carricmacross is now facing the possibility of going back to prison having been released from jail at the end of last month.

The DPP won the appeal after it argued that the sentence was unduly lenient given the excess of alcohol taken, the lives lost, and the dangerous manner in which the BMW vehicle was driven.
