411 jobs are to go in Dublin after Lufthansa Technik announced it is closing down its plant in Rathcoole.
Staff were given notice of termination of employment this morning.
Last month, management signalled their intention to close following a review of operations at the plant, where jet engines are overhauled. During that 30-day review period, stakeholders were consulted about the company's future plans. The company says profits had fallen and cited a decline in international demand for their products.
An offer from an outside party to take over the facility did not lead to any acceptable offer. Negotiations with the three trade unions and employee representatives failed to identify any viable alternatives or to reach agreement on severance terms.
In a statement this morning, Lufthansa says workers will be paid on completion of notice, at which time any ex-gratia payments agreed at the Labour Court today will be made.
The statement also says these payments will address the pension fund issue too.
