Almost 80% of drivers witness someone using a mobile phone while driving at least once a day.
But less than 17% admitted to calling or texting while behind the wheel, according to a new survey by AA Roadwatch.
Under Irish law, if a driver is caught on their phone they can incur 2 penalty points and a fixed charge of €60. In the event of non payment of this fine, 4 penalty points and a possible €2,000 fine will be enforced if convicted in court.
Research from the AA claims that drivers are four times more likely to cause a car crash if they use their phone while driving.
