I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but you do know summer is drawing to a close? We’re right into August now: kids are more than half way through their school holidays, the days are getting shorter and the supermarkets have their Halloween supplies bulk ordered and ready to rock. Not just that, but 2013 itself is entering its twilight months. You do know there’s only one bank holiday left until Christmas, right?

As a great fictional book once wisely advised: don’t panic. We need to adopt a glass half full attitude and make the most of these glorious* late summer days. There's still plenty of summer activities to get through while you still can. Here’s some of our recommendations:

Go zorbing

What says summer like throwing yourself down a hill in a giant inflatable ball? It’s as fun as it sounds, and zorbing is available in an increasing number of locations nationwide, from Carlingford to Ballymahon and plenty of spots in-between.

Swim in the sea

Yes, the Irish water is absolutely freezing at the best of times. Yet after the surprise heatwave many have rightly learned to appreciate the pleasures of taking a cooling and refreshing dip in the countless lovely coastal spots around the country. Make sure to do it while the weather is still good, and get some early practice for New Year’s Day.

Attend a festival

Wait, what do you mean most of the festivals are over already? And you didn’t make it to any of them? There’s so many of the things at this point it’s easy to take them for granted and forget that there’s only three months when they’re actually feasible here. Calm down: you can still grab your Electric Picnic tickets for the end of the month. Phew.

Go camping

The ground is semi-dry, there’s plenty of firewood and the weather is still reasonably pleasant from time to time. Yes, it’s a perfect chance to reconnect with the great outdoors (in a legal and respectful manner, we’re ethically obliged to sternly point out). There is nothing more miserable than camping on a cold, rainy night, so don’t wait until October: get that long-neglected tent out while the sun still sets late. Make sure you air it out first.

Take a roadtrip

Pick a weekend. Round up some friends. Make a mix CD (or pick up a cable to link up your smartphone). Load up the car with supplies. Book a hostel - or, even better, just wing it. Leave on Friday evening. Visit somewhere you haven’t before. Enjoy both the open road and the thrill of discovering something new right on your doorstep. Don’t think about Monday.
