Apple has named Brandon Ashmore from Mentor, Ohio as the person to have downloaded the milestone app, and the company has awarded Ashmore a $10,000 (€7,750) App Store voucher. The app in question was a download of Say the Same Thing – a free social game from band OK Go in which two players try to separately type the same word by logically connecting the two previous ones. The video below explains it better:
With over 500 million active accounts, the App Store has been reaching major milestones at ever faster speeds over the last few years. After Apple launched the store in July 2008, the 10 billionth app was downloaded in January 2011. Over four times as many apps have therefore been downloaded in the last two and a half years compared to the store’s first years.
The competing Google Play store, however, is not far behind the App Store, with Google announcing 48 billion app installs as of yesterday, as well as 900 million Android activations.
The following are the most downloaded apps as of earlier this month. Games dominate the paid field, while social network, video, music and photography apps have been particularly successful when offered free.
