Long-term unemployment now accounts for almost 60% of the total jobless figure.
That is according to the latest Quarterly National Household Survey from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).
It shows that just under 185,000 people are out of work for more than 12 months.
The report shows that the official over-all level of unemployment is also continuing to rise.
It is up by 1.3% in the year to the end of the 2nd quarter of 2012.
There was an annual decrease in employment of 1.8% or 33,400 in the year to the second quarter.
On a seasonally adjusted basis employment fell by 0.8% in the quarter.
While unemployment increased by 4,000 – or 1.3% – in the year to Q2 2012.
The long-term unemployment rate increased from 7.7% to 8.8% over the year.
Long-term unemployment accounted for 59.9% of total unemployment compared with 53.9% a year earlier.

He says there are now 308,500 people classed as unemployed.
