The company says the move is a necessary one for the site to stay competitive.

MSD makes active pharmaceutical ingredients at its plant in Brinny.

The company was established on the site in 1980 and currently employs 455 people.

However staff were told today that as a result of an effort to balance product demand with global supply there is simply not enough demand for what is made at the Cork site.

Management say the 90 jobs loses are needed for the site to remain competitive.

Staff at the pharmaceutical plant near Inishannon were called to a meting this afternoon.

Merck has a total of 7 plants in Ireland.

The company says that products produced in Brinny earn in excess of €2 billion sales per year and are exported to 90 countries across the globe.

The group provides innovative medicines, vaccines, biologic therapies and health products and has customers in 140 countries.

The company is known as MSD worldwide except in the United States and Canada where they are known as Merck.
