There has been outcry after the Government used Google Translate to write the content on an official government website, but it appears this is not an isolated incident.

Irish speakers said the website for the centenary of the 1916 Rising - launched on Wednesday - was 'unintelligible' and the government’s own Irish Language Commissioner, Rónán Ó Domhnaill, says inaccurate translations made using online tools is a frequent occurrence.

The Department of Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs says the page contained 'holding text' which has now been corrected.

Ó Domhnaill said “We get a lot of complaints from members of the public," regarding “Google translate and other internet tools being used to translate English into Irish.” As with the translation of the 1916 centenary website.

Ó Domhnaill says results are often so poor that Irish speakers cannot understand the translation.

“The result nearly always is unsatisfactory,” he said.

“Irish speaker don’t or can’t understand the Irish that is being published, it is inaccurate,” he added.
