A 150% surge in cosmetic nips and tucks in Ireland is down to people sitting and looking at themselves all day.

That's according to Professor Caitriona Ryan, consultant dermatologist at the Institute of Dermatologists.

She told Newstalk Breakfast that we have spent a lot more time examining our faces in lengthy virtual meetings.

She says the figures do not surprise her.

"I think there's lots of reasons - I think the first is that cosmetic clinics have been closed for a long time, so of course there's going to be a spike as the lockdown [lifts].

"But I do think it's been a year of a lot of self-inspection, I've never seen self-esteem as low as I have recently.

"And I think a lot of it is... people sitting on Zoom calls all day long, and never do you look at yourself for as long as that.

"People usually see themselves in the mirror on the way out the door and again at night time.

"They're sitting watching themselves talk, and Zoom is very unforgiving - and actually it doesn't portray people in the usual way at all.

"So they focus on their sagging jawlines, their double chins, things like this.

Prof Ryan says another factor is people who have saved money during the pandemic.

"And then the other obvious thing is that people who haven't lost their jobs have a lot more disposable income.

"So they're thinking of ways that they want to use it; they haven't been able to go on their usual holiday, they haven't been going out for dinners.

"People do have more disposable income at the moment, and they also are working from home - so they have downtime".

On the most popular procedures, she says they are mostly non-invasive.

"We're seeing people coming in for fillers, for skin tightening - particularly for the neck and jawline - and that's an area that people have really focused on.

"And then a lot of body sculpting - fat freezing, devices to increases the tone in their body - they haven't been to the gym in the last year and a half".
