A man has died following a single car collision in county Kilkenny last night.

The incident happened on the N9 at Knockwilliam in Ballyhale at approximately 9.15pm when the car he was driving collided with a bridge.

The 42-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of car, was pronounced dead at scene. His body has been removed to Waterford Regional Hospital, where a post mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.

The road is closed to allow garda forensic collision investigators to examine the scene and local diversions are in place.

Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
