A Dublin homeless charity has warned that dangerous hostels are forcing people to sleep on the streets after the latest homeless death in the capital.

Gardaí are investigating after the man was found dead on St Andrew's Street in Dublin 2 in the early hours of yesterday morning.

In a post on Facebook, the ‘A Lending Hand’ charity said the tragic death was predictable given the danger in the many homeless hostels in the city.

“One of our pals lost their life on the streets this morning,” they wrote.

“To say we are absolutely devastated is an understatement. We knew this would happen when people are taking their chances on the streets in freezing temperatures because the hostels are worse than the streets.

“How in 2024 does that even make sense?

“Serious questions need to be asked; how can the streets be safer than a hostel?”

The charity offered its condolences to the man’s family and friends.

“RIP Pal we hope you get the best bed in heaven [and] a safe bed – more than what was provided to you while you were on this earth,” they wrote.

The charity is warning that there will be more deaths on the streets unless more adequate and safe accommodation is provided.

Last week, the Government confirmed that more than 13,500 people were living in emergency accommodation in November.

The Department of Housing figures included a record high of 4,105 children facing Christmas without a home.

Meanwhile, Threshold is warning that nearly 1,200 more households are facing eviction in the coming months.

A Cold Weather Advisory remains in place for the entire country until Friday night.
