The Chair of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) says he is concerned at the timing of the decision by the St. Vincent’s Hospital to outline that it pays salary top-ups so close to Christmas.

The comments come following a statement from St. Vincent's Hospital admitting that the salary of its chief executive is in breach of pay caps.

In a statement last night, St. Vincent's admitted that Nicholas Jermyn is earning almost €300,000 a year. Less than half of his salary is paid by the Health Service Executive (HSE) with the rest funded by Vincent's private hospital.

It includes a €20,000 car allowance.

St. Vincent's Hospital is the second facility to come clean about how much its chief executive is being paid.

The Central Remedial Clinic (CRC) admitted earlier this month it was topping up salaries from charitable donations.

PAC chair John McGuinness says he believes the HSE is not fit for purpose.

Earlier, the Industry Correspondent with the Irish Times Martin Wall said it is not yet clear if anything can be done about Mr. Jermyn's salary.
