Gardaí have said they will continue their “relentless pursuit” of everyone involved in the murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe.

29-year-old Aaron Brady was this afternoon found guilty of the capital murder of Detective Brady during an armed robbery at a credit union in County Louth.

At least five people were involved in the robbery and Gardai believe there are others who assisted the gang both before and after the crime.

Speaking after the verdict, Deputy Garda Commissioner John Twomey said Gardaí will “leave no stone unturned” in the ongoing investigation.

“I have a clear message that the investigation continues,” he said.

“There were other people involved in this horrific crime and you will be brought to justice.

“No society can tolerate crimes of this nature and we, as a law enforcement agency, will do everything we can to work with the community to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“To the people who committed the crime, we will be knocking on your door and we will make sure that you pay for this horrendous act.”

Meanwhile, Chief Superintendent Christy Mangan from the Louth Division said Detective Donohoe’s murder left his wife, family and friends “utterly devastated.”

“Today is a positive step with the conviction of Aaron Brady for the robbery and capital murder of Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe,” he said.

“It is an important step towards ensuring that all persons involved in the murder of Adrian and the subsequent provision of assistance to those involved will be brought to justice.

“We will never cease in our quest to bring accountability to those who have murdered Adrian. We owe that to his memory, to his family, to his friends and to the people of Ireland.”

Brady’s sentencing has been put back until October; however, he will face a minimum of 40 years in prison.

Superintendent Mangan said the offence of capital murder is there to protect the rule of law in the State.

“The verdict of capital murder is a very rare verdict in the country,” he said.

“It is there for a reason. To deter criminals like Aaron Brady from picking up a firearm and going out and challenging the rule of law.

“That is what was done here. They murdered Adrian, they left the scene, they went into Northern Ireland and then they thought that borders would save them.

“But borders didn’t save them. The long arm of the law extended into the Untied State of America and ensured that Aaron Brady faced justice here today.”
