On this week’s So You Think You’re an Adult, one woman cannot stand her boyfriend’s latest hobby of singing. 

“My boyfriend is one of the sweetest men I have ever met, he is always supportive, but I have noticed that he tends to go from hobby to hobby,” she told Moncrieff. 

“All lasting a month, the lack of commitment to hobbies does concern me as we are still in a new relationship. 

“His newest hobby is singing. I do not mean to be unsupportive because I really care for him, but he serenaded me on Valentines Day as a gift - it was God awful.” 

She said her boyfriend has started singing in front of their friends, who are “always silent” during his performances. 

“He takes it as them being in awe of his George Michael-esque voice,” he said.  

“I haven’t mentioned to anyone how much I cannot stand the singing... What should I do? Should I tell him that he may not be as good as he thinks?” 

'Just tell him'

Writer Barbara Scully asked, “why would you not tell him he can’t sing?” 

“Why you nod and smiling politely while he’s murdering songs – I don’t understand,” she said. 

She pointed out she had a similar issue with her husband when they first started dating. 

“It was very early days, and we were in the car, and he started singing along to something on the radio,” she explained. 

“Beside the fact I nearly crash I remember telling him if he ever sings out loud in front of me again, that’s it."

'You don't trump him'

Broadcaster Declan Buckley, however, took the exact opposite opinion to Barbara. 

“Just because he likes singing and you don’t like the sound of his singing, you don’t trump him,” he said. 

“Your desire and your judgement don’t give you the authority to stop him. 

“A person is allowed to engage in their hobby, regardless of whether they’re good.” 

Declan recommended the girlfriend simply not listen to her boyfriend when he sings.
