On this week’s So You Think You’re an Adult segment, one friend group is fractured over a new job and a holiday at risk.
“Our group of four – tight since college - planned our dream holiday,” one friend told Moncrieff.
“But just as it's as it's within reach, one of the lads lands a job offer of a lifetime and can’t come.
“One of the group votes for postponing to keep the gang together, while another is all go going as planned, citing the headache and ‘walletache’ of changing plans.”
The man said, as the “casting vote” on the debate, he wants to “balance friendship and practicality”.
'It's the not the end of the world'
Writer Barbara Scully pointed out this “isn’t a huge, big, important life changing decision” for anyone involved - it's a holiday.
“Say what it is what you want to do and stop trying to keep everyone happy,” she said.
Broadcaster Declan Buckley suggested the friend might see themselves as the “facilitator” of the group – but Barbara said that’s no excuse for indecision.
“They've paid at least a deposit, they're committed to this,” she said. “It's not the end of the world if one fella doesn't go and gets left behind.
“It’s very unfair of the person who can't go because of the job to insist that the others don’t go.”
Dream holiday
Declan said issues can arise if people are too “headstrong” in arguing about the holiday.
“In this instance through, I totally agree with [Barbara],” he said. “Do you want to have a getaway with this particular group of people, in which case then scheduling and timing is everything.
“If it’s about going to a particular place, then go... Do you want to go to see the place where the opportunity is within grasp?”
Host Sean Moncrieff pointed out the friend with the new job should simply fall on his sword and let the others go on holiday themselves.
