On this week’s So You Think You’re an Adult, one woman is deeply concerned about the maid outfit her husband bought to “spice up” their relationship.
“My husband arrived home from work with some Valentine's gifts,” she told Moncreiff.
“There was traditional flowers and chocolates, but he also got me a maid's outfit.
“When I asked him what it was for, he told me that he wanted me to dress up during sex ‘for the night that’s in it’.
After telling her husband she wasn’t “comfortable” and thought the outfit was “stupid” he apparently got “defensive”.
“He said that we should add a bit of excitement into our sex life, and that we can’t just keep having the ‘same sex over and over again’,” she said.
“I now feel like he no longer wants to have sex with me unless I am dress up in some ridiculous outfit.”
A Valentine's mess
Writer Barbara Scully said she’s never been in this particular situation herself but thought the woman could give her husband a little leeway.
“I think this woman is jumping to a very wild conclusion by going from the fact that the husband brought her home the maid’s outfit to thinking this means her husband doesn’t want to have sex with her anymore,” she said.
“I understand why she's annoyed... but she's drawn a line that's gone too far in one direction.
“I think this was really just a clumsy attempt by the husband to add some excitement to the sex life.
“I think he got it wrong, but I think his intention perhaps wasn't as dark or negative as she's interpreting it.”
'Don't see it as criticism'
Broadcaster Declan Buckley said there was a bit of an “overreaction” on both sides.
“He showed up with this kind of archaic view of what is that kind of a sexy time was,” he said.
“The danger of when you suggest more ‘spice’... the other person can take umbrage.
“Just take it a little wee breath and don’t see it as a criticism.”
Both Declan and Barbara said the couple need to have a blunt conversation about their life in the bedroom, without getting offended or surprising the other with kinky clothes.
