One woman has found herself in a love triangle at work, as she risks losing an office friend over their mutual interest in another co-worker.

On this week’s So You Think You’re an Adult segment, a woman told of a ‘complicated situation’ she has found herself in at work.

“I've developed feelings for a man I work with – for the sake of this let's call him Mark,” she told Moncrieff.

“Initially my friend – we'll call her Emily – and I had a great dynamic.

“We collaborated well on projects and often hung out outside of work – however, as I started to express my interest in Mark by inviting him to lunch and trying to spend more time with them, I noticed that things began to change between Emily and me.”

The woman said that her and Emily have developed an ‘awkward tension’ between them, and have started to avoid each other.

She asked: “How should I approach this situation to address my feelings for him while also considering my friendship with Emily?”

Open communication

Broadcaster Barbara Scully said the two woman should have an open conversation about the situation.

“Why can’t you both just wish each other well?” she said.

“Then whoever Mark chooses – if he chooses one of you, and I think he’s not going to choose either one of you – you both accept that?”

Barbara said that had Mark been interested “something would have happened by now”.

“The other thing is there’s a very important rule of female friendship,” she said.

“Which is that you don’t let a guy get in the way of the friendship.”

Other fish in the sea

TV personality Declan Buckley said there are other fish in the sea, and that the drama caused by this situation may not be worth the hassle.

“Creating that kind of energy there implies that there’s only one Mark in the universe, there’s nobody else, and that they have no other alternatives other than to detonate this atomic bomb at work,” he said.

The two both agreed that both women need to be evaluate their priorities and decide if a potential romantic relationship is worth more to them than an established friendship.
