Working from home can be more convenient – but it’s becoming a headache for one woman who lives in a noisy housing estate full of children.

The woman told So You Think You’re an Adult she works from the living room of her home in a small housing estate.

In the past decade, more young families have moved in – which is “driving her mad”.

“Since the weather has gotten better, every day after school the kids are out playing on the road, screaming and shouting like mad,” she told Moncrieff.

“It’s interrupting all my work calls, and I can’t hear myself think.

“They have also taken to drawing all over the footpaths in front of my house with chalk to play hopscotch.”

The children also come from “all directions” and the woman feels she cannot drive through the estate properly.

“I was thinking of contacting the council to see if I can get some additional rules put in place, but my friends say I should speak to the parents first,” she said.

Actress Mary McEvoy said the woman shouldn’t be asking how to get rid of the children – but why would she want to get rid of them.

“We always say kids never play [outside], they’re always on their phone,” she said.

“This is the kind of children we want nowadays - the kind that get out, play hopscotch, have a bit of fun out exercising.”

She suggested the impatient woman find a ‘quieter place’ in her home.

“The greater is good is served by these kids outside playing,” she said.

“The only thing I would worry about is the kids coming out of all directions.”

Noise in an estate

Writer and broadcaster Barbara Scully said she had a similar concern about the children’s safety – but that’s up to the woman to address.

“You're not meant to drive fast in an estate,” she said.

She agreed with Mary that the woman is overreacting – pointing out that this is what happens when you live in a noisy housing estate.

“You’re going to be aware of what’s around you,” she said.

“Did [the texter] never have kids? Was she ever a child herself?”

'Older, more intolerant'

Barbara suggested part of the women’s bitterness could be a matter of age.

“This is not that unusual – very often, I hate to say this, as people get older they become very intolerant,” she said.

If the problem persists, the woman can always pack up and move to the quiet countryside, Barbara said.
