Aer Lingus reports 40% rise in profits for 2012

Revenues rose by 8% to €1.4 billion - helped mainly by a good performance by the airline's long haul routes to America.

The airline says 2012 was a record year in terms of passenger numbers with a total of 10.8 million passengers choosing to fly with them.

Aer Lingus says the new year is proving positive too - with the highest day of revenue in the history of the airline booked in January.

With the Ryanair takeover bid looming, Chief Executive of Aer Lingus Christoph Mueller says he is not worried about Michael O'Leary's proposal to use British airline FlyBe to take over most of Aer Lingus' short haul routes, if the bid is successful.
