The outcome of a ballot on a pay recommendation for pilots at Aer Lingus will be revealed this morning.

The executive of the Irish Air Line Pilots' Association (IALPA) recommended acceptance of Labour Court proposals which included a 17.75% pay increase over a four-year period.

Two weeks of industrial action by pilots led to the cancellation of 610 flights.

Earlier this month IALPA met and passed a motion to recommend acceptance of the Labour Court recommendation.

The union also held a series of engagements with members before a ballot on the terms of the recommendation.

The electronic vote began last Thursday and closes this morning.

IALPA President Mark Tighe has previously described the pay increase provided for in the recommendation as "a significant win for pilots".

'An end to uncertainty'

Travel Extra Editor Eoghan Corry told Newstalk he is expecting an overwhelming acceptance by pilots.

"It's absolutely certain IALPA will confirm that they're happy with the Labour Court recommendation if it's recommended by the executive," he said.

"The history of IALPA is of backing what the executive recommends.

"It will bring an end to all the uncertainty that has resulted from the dispute between Aer Lingus and its pilots."

Mr Corry said it's also possible there could be knock-on effects for other pilots within Aer Lingus' parent company, the International Airlines Group (IAG), in the future.

"They'll also be looking at the knock-on effect for pilots in other airlines in the IAG group, such as Iberia and British Airways," he said.

"It is the end of any of the uncertainty that Aer Lingus passengers would have experienced and any of the knock-ons will be in the future".

The deal also recommends a 10% increase to overnight allowances and a further 5% from October next year.

Pilots had been looking for a 24% pay increase which they said was down to inflation.
