Airbnb's latest letting: A cable car dangling above the French Alps

Airbnb is offering holiday makers the chance to stay in a cable care dangling from a wire suspended in the air near the Courcheval ski resort in the French Alps. But those looking for a night off the piste need to get creative, as the room is only available as the grand prize in Airbnb’s latest competition.

Near the Saulire summit, a mountain in the middle of the Massif de la Vano, 2,700m above sea level, the cable car has been spruced up and converted into a one-bedroom, two-bed apartment, and can host as many as four guests per night.

Airbnb says the guests will be chauffeured up the mountain on snowmobiles before sipping on mulled wine while taking the view from the top of the mountain. Then, after checking into the cable car, after dining on cheese fondue, the room will be winched up to the very highest point of Courcheval and left dangling for the night.

The room is part of Airbnb’s ever more elaborate A Night At... programme, which opens up some very unusual guestrooms to applicants, where they can get away from it all for a 24-hour stay in one-of-a-kind locations. Airbnb previously offered a night in a disused KLM airliner in Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands.

While vertiginous swaying in the wind, hanging on to a creaking cable above the hard icy ground might not be a relaxing break for everyone, anyone interested in claiming a night needs to click here to explain in 100 words why you deserve it.

The closing date is February 26th, and the cable car will be available for one night only on March 6th.
