A small aircraft has crashed and burst into flames at an airport in Alaska, killing all 10 people on board.

The accident is believed to have happened as the plane took off from Soldotna airport, around 60 miles from Anchorage.

An Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman said the aircraft was engulfed in flames before firefighters were able to get to the crash site.

The body has launched an investigation.

The victims have not yet been identified.

The plane was operated by local company, Rediske Air, which provides sightseeing charters and 'air taxi' services.

Flying across the vast northern state is common for Alaska residents, despite hazards including treacherous mountain passes and volatile weather.

The crash comes just a day after Asiana Airlines flight 214 crashed in San Francisco, killing 2 people and injuring around 180 more.
