The Dublin South TD Alex White is to be the new Junior Health Minister.
Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has appointed him to the post with responsibility for Primary Care.
It follows the resignation of Roisin Shortall from the job last night.
She said there was a lack of support in the Department and across government for the promises made in the Programme for Government.
It is expected the formal appointment of Deputy White as Minister of State will be made at the next Cabinet meeting on October 2nd.
The Tánaiste said that he looked forward to working with Deputy White in his new role as Minister of State in implementing the commitments in the Programme for Government on health service reforms.
Deputy White is currently Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform.
Mr. White is Labour TD for Dublin-South and a Senior Counsel.
