A new opinion poll out today shows that over 35% of people support government proposals to legislate for abortion in limited cases.

However the Paddy Power/Red C poll shows that 1-in-4 voters believe legislating for abortion on the grounds of a suicide threat is a step too far.

Almost two-thirds of the electorate directly support the governments decision to legalise the 'X Case' - allowing abortion where the mother’s life is at risk, including by suicide when provided with a selection of possible alternatives.

A further 29% would go further and support legalising abortion in any case where a woman requests it.

The poll shows at least 64% in total of all voters would at least support the legalisation of the 'X Case' with some preferring that it went further.

This leaves just over 26% preferring to see a Constitutional amendment to limit the 'X Case' by excluding the threat of suicide to the mothers life as a reason for abortion.

While 8% do not want to see any legalisation of abortion law.

Younger age groups show greater support for legalising abortion in any case, while older age groups have higher-than-average support for limiting the 'X Case' by excluding the threat of suicide.

Decline in Fine Gael support

The poll also shows a steady decline in support for Fine Gael since the election.

The party is on 29% which is a drop of 7 points over the past 2 years.

Labour remains steady on 13% but are down 6 points since election day.

Fianna Fail are up to 21% up 4 points since election day while Sinn Fein is up 6% points since the election on 16%.

Independents are on 21%.

The poll also shows a decline in performance for most leaders in terms of party leadership when compared to March 2012.

Only Micheal Martin has managed to both increase satisfaction, and decrease dissatisfaction levels.

Enda Kenny although declining in satisfaction, remains the strongest performer in terms of satisfaction.

However his dissatisfaction levels have increased from 27% to 34%.
