A Supermoon is described as being the coincidence of a full or new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit.

This results in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.

Yesterday's supermoon was the second, and biggest, of a trio of supermoons to appear this summer.

The first appeared on 12th July and the 3rd will be visable in our skies on 9th September, the last until the 29th September 2015.
