Marty Morrissey has apologised for not declaring use of a free Renault car and declared it an “error of judgement”.
On his social media, the sports broadcaster published a statement that he had been offered the car after MC-ing a series of interviews with GAA figures at Renault garages in 2017.
Mr Morrissey said he accepted no fee for the engagements and was given permission by RTÉ to appear at them.
At no point did Mr Morrissey serve as a brand ambassador for Renault and he said there was never any expectation that he “publicly endorse or promote Renault on air, on social media or otherwise while I had use of the car.”
In the wake of the controversy surrounding RTÉ’s hidden payments to Ryan Trubridy, Mr Morrissey decided to return the car and declared his use of it this week to his colleagues at RTÉ.
Mr Morrissey said he has apologised to RTÉ for any “embarrassment or difficulty” and would like to do so to any viewers who feel “let down by [his] actions”.
