The government is expected to confirm the proposed sale of part of Bord Gais today.

Minister Pat Rabbitte has been seeking Cabinet approval for new laws which would allow the energy business to be sold.

It is thought that the sale of the business could raise up to €1.5 billion for the taxpayer.

Mr. Rabbitte said this morning the sale could help with funding the rural broadband scheme, adding that the Troika would want to see how Ireland was spending the money.

"We must demonstrate to the Troika that the funds will be used for productive purposes, to contribute to the expansion potential of the economy" he told RTÉ radio.

He says there has been 'a healthy interest' in the company.

But Michael McGrath of Fianna Fail says he is concerned that the control of the water system could be affected.
