It has been revealed that the ex-wife of Texas politician Jonathan Saenz left him for another woman months before he became leader of an anti-gay group.
According to court reports obtained by LGBT news source Lone Star Q, Saenz's wife was a member of the LGBT community and dating another woman when she filed for divorce from the right-wing politician in 2011.
In 2012, while their divorce was still pending, Saenz was made leader of Texas anti-gay group, Texas Values, and vehemently fought the passing of same-sex marriage bills.
During their divorce, Saenz sought to permanently bar his wife Corrine’s girlfriend from being in the presence of their children.
He also sought to jail his ex-wife for failing to undergo an evaluation by a psychologist of his choosing, even though he refused to pay the psychologist’s fee.
In her original petition for divorce, Corrine alleged their marriage was “insupportable due to discord or conflict of personalities that destroys the legitimate ends of marriage and prevents reasonable expectations of reconciliation.”
At the time of filing for divorce, she had been dating a woman who was a fellow teacher at the primary school where they bought worked.
Saenz, a devout Catholic, has been a right-wing operative in Texas for many years but it is believed that his wife's leaving him for another woman is what sparked his furious anti-LGBT campaign in Texas recently.
Jonathan and Corrine Saenz are now separated and share custody of their two sons and one daughter, all still under the age of 10.
