Police in Australia have issued a fresh appeal for information after an Irish man who was assaulted in Melbourne last month lost his fight for life overnight.

30-year-old David Greene from Dun Laoghaire in Dublin had been in hospital since the incident which happened at the hostel where he worked in Saint Kilda on August 26th.

His friend – 28-year-old David Byas is also from Dun Laoghaire.

He was injured in the attack too but is now recovering at a rehabilitation centre.

A 31-year-old St Kilda East man was charged with the alleged assault on August 27th.

He was remanded in custody to reappear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on October 8th.

John Potter is a detective inspector with the Homicide Squad.

He is appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
