The iPhone 5s and 5c went on sale in eleven territories - US, Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the UK - last week, and Apple has announced that they've shattered their own record for first weekend sales. The two phones together sold over 9 million units, compared to 5 million for last year's iPhone 5.

Although Apple has not broken down the sales between the 'premium' 5s and the cheaper 5c models, evidence indicates the 5s - complete with fingerprint scanner - was the bigger seller. Apple confirms "demand for iPhone 5s has exceeded the initial supply", while the Apple online store currently has the 5c in stock (compared to estimated ship date of October for 5s orders). However, there were some reports of manufacturing issues with the more expensive phone, suggesting shortages might not have been down to demand alone.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has said "the demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone." Apple will be hoping the new phones continue to be a big hit, as they continue to lose market share to Android phones.

Although the new phones are not yet available in Ireland - with no currently announced release date other than a general 'later this year' - Apple's iOS 7 was made available to all Apple device holders last Wednesday (as long as their device supports it). Apple is calling that launch "the fastest software upgrade in history", saying over 200 million Apple mobile devices are now running the new operating system. However, the OS release was soured by widespread reports of download and update problems.
