Apple has unveiled its latest iPhone in San Francisco.
/> The company is calling it the iPhone 5 and says it is the thinnest, lightest smartphone ever.

It will have a larger, 4-inch screen showing 5 rows of icons with a retina display.

It will also have the ability to surf a high-speed 4G LTE wireless network and is 20% lighter than the previous model the iPhone 4S.

It comes with a new A6 processor which the company claim runs twice as fast as the previous version.

It will have 3 microphones and a better 8-megapixel camera.

The new model is set to launch in the US market on September 21st with pre-orders for it beginning this Friday.

It will cost the US consumer US$199 for the cheapest 16-gigabyte version with prices going up to US$399 at the top end.

But one design change which may annoy many is the introduction of a new dock connector.

This will see the loss of the traditional 30-pin connector which has been around since the first iPod.

In its place there will be a new “lightning” version which will be smaller.

However users can purchase adaptors for their old devices.

Also the voiceover feature Siri is to improve as well.

Apple says users of the new iPhone will be able to use it to post messages to Facebook.

A release date for Ireland has yet to be announced but it is expected the smartphone will be sold in 100 countries by the end of the year.

Apple has sold more than 243 million iPhones since its 2007 arrival.
