Wholefoods Wholesale is recalling a batch of organic apricot kernels over the potential risk of cyanide poisoning.
Packets of Rainbow Organic’s 'Organic Apricots Kernals Bitter' have been recalled as there are no directions for use provided on its label.
Due to the potential acute and long-term toxic effects associated with cyanide, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (ASAI) advises that adults don’t eat more than one or two apricot kernels per day, as doses above this could lead to poisoning.
However, these risks were not outlined on some packets of the Rainbow Organic product sold by Wholefoods Wholesale.
The company has issued point-of-sale notices which will be displayed in shops that sold the affected product.
Only 250 gram packs of Rainbow Organic’s 'Organic Apricots Kernals Bitter' with the best before date 29/08/16 and the batch code 55467 DD 6 are impacted.
Another brand, Nua Naturals, also recalled several batches of organic apricot kernels last week as their labels provided incorrect information about recommended use.
The FSAI’s website provides more information on the consumption of bitter apricot kernels and bitter almonds.
