A female secondary school student has queried if she should be 'wearing bin bags' to school, after they were told they cannot wear tight-fit clothing for PE.

An online petition that criticises Presentation College Carlow has reached over 10,000 signatures.

The school is facing calls to apologise to its female students, after singling them out at an assembly last week.

They were told they cannot wear tight-fit clothing into school for PE.

This student told Kacey O'Riordan for The Hard Shoulder she was disgusted with the way they were spoken to.

"Like we should take a look in the mirror before we come to school, and take a look at ourselves.

"I feel like that's wrong and could cause so many other issues like body issues and stuff with other girls.

"I feel like it should be addressed, that we should get an apology and we shouldn't have to ask for an apology - I feel like we should just be given it.

"We should be allowed to wear bottoms that show off our figure.

"I don't understand what the problem is.

"We're people, what are we supposed to do? Cover our legs from head to toe, come in bin bags?

"I don't understand - I really don't, it doesn't make any sense".

Another student said: "They said that we should have more respect for ourselves, stuff like that.

"That's not the first incident that something like this has been said.

"Our principal said it was a misunderstanding and all, that's not how they meant to phrase it".

Earlier Sandy Haughney, whose daughter is a student at the school, said the girls were told that tight black tracksuit bottoms would be banned because they are "too tight and revealing."

She told Newstalk Breakfast a survey among students threw up several keywords they used to describe their feelings after the announcement: "degraded, paranoid, violated, disgusted."

She said “the parents and the children need to be reassured that they are safe in school.

"Also, yesterday they were told that if they continue talking about this, they are going to receive slips.

"Now if you get a certain amount slips in school, you get detention which means that if you talk about this you are going to be punished. Now that is completely unacceptable."

As part of a protest, it is believed male students at the school are planning to wear leggings on Friday.
