People can now check what broadband options are available in their area with a fully objective new tool from the Commission for Communications Regulation.

ComReg has launched its online Broadband Checker to help people find what fixed options are available to them.

Users can simply enter either an Eircode or an address into the website.

If broadband is available or planned, a user will be provided with a table showing the network operator, type of broadband and its speed.

ComReg also has further advice and information on broadband and mobile services on its website.

This includes two tools that allow people to compare options from different retailers and a mobile coverage map for the country.

ComReg Consumer Policy Manager Barbara Delaney told Breakfast Business people should be aware of their broadband choices.

"We provide a suite of tools on comreg.ie,” she said.

Firstly, to check your coverage - be it either fixed broadband or mobile service – there are two tools for that.

"Then you can compare your packages and plans among all the providers to see what might be best for you."

Switching broadband

Ms Delaney said new regulations are also being introduced to make it easier to change broadband providers.

"There are new switching rights [which] means you can switch between providers without trying to coordinate - 'I'm leaving this providers on this date and joining that provider on the other date'" she said.

"That's obviously crucial... given our reliance on broadband - so that's really important that you can switch without interruption.

"The second thing is that when you get your end of contract notice... you can then look to see if I want to stay with your current provider.

"If I want to switch, I go to my new provider and sign up to the contract that I want and they will deal with the switching from my old provider," she added.

Ms Delaney said for those that are still in contract there may be other terms they need to abide by before switching.
