Armed Gardaí used tasers to subdue a man who was allegedly threatening officers with a machete in a major incident in a remote part of County Kerry yesterday evening.
Gardaí said they originally responded to reports of a burglary and criminal damage incident at a house in Rylane, Abbeyfeale at around 7:45pm.
Upon arriving at the house, Gardaí say, officers were threatened by a man carrying a machete who refused to comply with their directions.
He then fled the scene into a nearby forest.
The Garda Armed Support Unit (ASU) was then called in alongside the Garda helicopter and the Dog Unit.
The house was sealed off while Gardaí carried out a major search of the area.
Gardaí said they found the man a short time later; however, he “continued to act in a threatening manner” towards the officers.
The ASU then used “less-than-lethal force devices,” including a taser, to subdue the man.
He was then arrested and is currently being held at a Garda station in County Kerry.
Gardaí said several scenes remain sealed off for technical examinations this afternoon and the Garda investigation is ongoing.
The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) has been notified.
