The Army Bomb Disposal team made safe a six inch coastal artillery shell at Kilmore Quay this evening.
A spokesperson says it is likely to be from a rifle cannon from the nineteenth century and was most likely solid shot without viable explosive content.
The Defence Forces deployed an EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team to Wexford following a request from the Gardai.
The badly corroded artillery shell was apparently discovered in the net of a local fisherman who alerted the Gardai. A cordon was put in place for public safety.
The team arrived on scene at 8.45 pm and examined the projectile in location.
The shell was declared safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and will be returned to a secure military location for further examination and later disposal.
The scene was declared safe at 9.20pm.
