It is nearly 30 years since divorce was legalised in Ireland and in that time, much of the stigma around marriage breakup has been reduced.
Texter wrote into The Anton Savage Show to ask family law solicitor Keith Walsh about the division of property under Irish divorce law.
"There's no automatic assumption of a 50/50 split," he said.
"Most people who come into my office looking for advice on divorce or separation come in with that thinking that, 'Oh, it has to be 50/50 on everything' - it doesn't.
"What would the period of the 50/50 be? Is it from the date that you acquired the asset or the date you got married - and that's particularly relevant for pensions."
Mr Walsh said it can become complicated when one person in a divorce feels they are entitled to a portion of a pension fund that the other person has been paying into since before the marriage.
