"Caring for the injured is currently the top priority," the post added.

"Support the rescue services by keeping the escape routes clear."

The driver was a 24-year-old Afghan national, a police spokesperson has revealed.

Police have said the driver has been "secured on site" and "currently poses no further danger".

People were "crying and shaking" after the incident, according to a reporter on the scene in Munich.

The union, Verdi, says it does not have any information on the incident.

The car approached police vehicles at the scene before speeding up and hitting people, police have confirmed.

The region's interior minister said the suspect was known to police in relation to drug and theft incidents.

The incident took place in southern Germany, with police on the scene on a street called Seidlstrasse in the central area of Munich.

According to Bild (the German tabloid newspaper), the driver of a Mini Cooper allegedly sped into demonstrators at about 10.30am local time (9.30am Dublin).

The group of people struck appeared to be at a rally organised by a union called Verdi – reportedly taking part in a strike.

Munich Police has confirmed a shot was fired "during the arrest".

Sky News’ Europe correspondent Siobhan Robbins said reports have quoted eyewitnesses, who are saying that police may have shot at the car window, possibly to gain access.
