At least 39 people have been killed after a plane crashed in Iran.

Authorities say 9 others were hurt when the aircraft went down in a residential area near Mehrabad airport west of the capital Tehran.

It is understood the plane was on an internal flight in Iran. The plane took off at 9.20am local time and crashed shortly after take-off.
