An investigation is underway after a hit-and-run crash and an attempted hijacking in Dublin last night.

A man suffered self-inflicted knife wounds following a series of incidents in Tallaght.

At around 9pm, two cars were involved in a crash on Cookstown Way.

Significant damage was caused to one of the cars involved, but the driver - a woman in her 30s - was not injured.

The other car came to a stop after crashing into a bollard.

The driver of that car fled the scene on foot, before attempting to hijack a car at knife point at nearby Watergate Estate.

After the alarm was raised, local detectives and members of the Armed Support Unit (ASU) were deployed to the area.

During a follow-up operation, they found a man armed with a knife at Rosebank Estate and attempted to approach him.

However, he then turned the knife on himself.

ASU members used non-lethal force and safely apprehended the man.

After gardaí provided first aid, the man was taken to Tallaght Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Gardaí say their investigation is ongoing, and they are now appealing for witnesses.

Anyone with information can contact Tallaght Garda Station 01-666-6000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
