David Bowie's latest album The Next Day is one of the Mercury Prize nominees tonight. The album was released to generally ecstatic critical and audience acclaim. However, it remains to be seen whether it will enjoy the same legacy as other efforts from his rich discography.
Heroes - from the album of the same name - wasn't a big hit on release, only charting at #24 in the UK and failing to make the Billboard Hot 100 chart entirely. Nonetheless, the song's reputation has consistently improved with time, and it has been called Bowie's best song by many fans.
Recently, whole new generations were introduced to the song through its placement during the 2012 Olympics' opening ceremony. It also featured prominently in the recent cinema hit The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
During the summer, the song featured as one of The Right Hook's Essential Songs of the 20th Century, as chosen by Bill Hughes. You can listen back to the podcast via the player above.
