Junior doctors are expected to vote in favour of industrial action, when the result of a ballot by the Irish Medical Organisation is released this afternoon.
Some 2,000 doctors have been balloted on the action, calling for a reduction in working hours.
The IMO says most junior doctors work a 60 hour week - contrary to EU regulations.
If the ballot result is in favour of action, doctors may withdraw from all work except emergency care in hospitals.
