Two powerful storms have hit the northeast coast of Australia, forcing tens of thousands of people to shelter from damaging winds and heavy rain.

Tropical Cyclone Marcia hit land as a category five storm - the highest rating - with winds of over 270 kilometres per hour.

Meanwhile Cyclone Lam struck the remote island communities in the Northern Territories.

There are 25 weather warnings in place across the country, with the most in Queensland.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott says the government is ready to offer assistance.

While Queensland's State Premier, Annastacia Palaszczuk, has been trying to reassure locals.

Meanwhile two women have been freed from a broken down lift in a Yeppoon hotel as Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast.
