A baby boy has died after being found seriously injured under his mother's body at Cork University Maternity Hospital.
The 36-year-old mother of the newborn child was discovered unresponsive on the floor of her hospital room on Monday morning.
The newborn passed away shortly after 7pm last night despite efforts to stabilise his condition.
In a statement today, the South South West Hospital Group confirmed the four-day-old boy died yesterday.
They said: "As with all unexplained deaths a full medical investigation was immediately initiated. This investigation is currently underway at CUMH.
"CUMH wishes to express its deepest sympathy with the family of the mother and her baby.
"The priority now for the hospital is the well-being of their family."
One possibility being investigated is that the woman may have become unwell, and fell out of bed while breastfeeding.
